Behind the name

Ms. Guided in Life is a play on words with the position I have in my life at the moment.

I am a credentialed school counselor and I work in a high school where I run a College and Career Center.  My main overall goal is to provide helpful and useful resources to over 2,300 students, and in the end, help my students form a plan for life after high school. That's where the guided part comes from because I guide students and others who need help in college and career information.

Put it together with Ms. Guided and is actually how I feel a lot of times in my own personal life--misguided and confused.  I question my future a lot which causes me anxiety.  For a person who has been raised to follow the rules and to have a plan, this is way out of my comfort zone.  Throw in the fact that my boyfriend lives in Morocco, I'm looking for a school counseling job, venturing into the blog world, thinking about the possibility of going back to school to get a degree in something completely different from what I have now, not knowing what I will do or where I will be in a few years scares the living shit out of me.

I wish I can be a little less anxious and more open to what the future holds for me and learn to accept it.  But my fears of failing are far too great. In times when I feel less afraid, I remember what my best friend and godsister, Yoly once told me in times of a tough heartbreak, "Things don't happen to you, they happen for you." She's right! Not having those rough moments in my life wouldn't have taught me new things about myself.

So, with that in mind, it's time to learn to accept the things that may come my way.  I invite you to follow my blog and join me on this journey while I learn and grow into the person I want to be and hopefully you will learn more things about yourself in return.

Full speed ahead,
Mayra :)

New Year's Eve Hispanic Traditions

I seriously believe that every culture has some very interesting ways of welcoming the New Year.  I grew up in a Mexican household in the United States, so I got the best of both worlds. I do have to say, that we have some every fun and creative ways to welcome the New Year:

Seeing the light

I'm sure you've heard of stories about other people having near death experiences they encounter when they find themselves in very dangerous situations.  I was watching a program as part of the Super Soul Sunday series of comedian Tracy Morgan talk about the accident that almost took his life about a year and half ago which happened on his drive home after doing a comedy show.  He talks about seeing his deceased father coming to him and telling him that he wasn't ready for him yet.  It made me think of my near death experience I had in high school.

Unanswered Prayers: Explained

When I was younger and naive, I used to pray a lot for the things I wanted and needed in my life.  A few years ago, I met a guy from an online dating site who I was certain he was the one for me. Over the years, I never truly understood why God didn't answer my prayers -- until now. It was very apparent to me that as this guy and I both grew up and live completely different lives; I noticed an overarching theme in his life where in the end, he has no inner peace in his life.  The drama in his life is still there as it was when I first met him many years ago but appear to be present in different ways.
