It's a little embarrassing to admit that I don't know how to swim. I always had a fear of swimming pools and being in the actual ocean is something that don't really desire to do. Mostly because the beaches I've been to smell too much like fish or that yucky ocean smell that makes me want to gag.
I remember taking swimming in physical education class when I was in high school but I don't really remember actually learning how to swim. I was in the water and mostly pretended to have done the exercises and trying to see how long I can hold my breath under water.
So, at this age finally, I've decided to take a huge step this summer and actually learn how to swim. Plus, swimming is definitely a great way to work out all the muscles in the body at once and actually conquer my fear of the water. I'm also hoping not to sink and learn to swim without the "floaties" on. It's also good to learn how to swim so I can finally visit all the cities with amazing beaches and actually enjoy my time there.
If you have any tips on what exercises I should try out in the pool or where to go for swimming lessons, please pass them along and I will look into them.
Here's a story about my dad's clever response to a stranger.
Several years ago, my parents were coming home to California from Mexico via airplane. A nervous older lady sat next to my dad and in trying to calm her nerves, she started chatting with my dad. She explained to my dad that she was coming to Los Angeles to see her grown children and their families for a while. She then asked my dad, "Sir, are you afraid to fly?" And my dad responded, "No, of course not! I know how to swim." The lady did not expect that answer and only became more nervous. If you knew my dad, you would know that he has a witty sense of humor.
So, just like my dad, I want to be able to learn how to swim and feel more at ease every time I have to fly over large bodies of water. LOL!
Until next time,
Mayra :)
