My 10 Reasons for Walking

Just recently, my doctor suggested that I try going on walks to help de-stress and build my serotonin levels.  So, I decided to follow her advice and I'm doing just that! I had almost forgotten how good it feels to get out and actually go for a nice, long walk. I've been going almost daily for the past three weeks and so far, this is what I have discovered:

1.  I look forward to going for a walk, and even more because I take my dog, Snoopy out and we both get our daily exercise. **Get to know Snoopy here.**

2. There is always a nice breeze in the evenings and I enjoy how it feels on my skin.

3. The pitter patter of my dog's paws is quite soothing to hear as they hit the concrete sidewalk with each step.

4. I downloaded an app on my phone called Pacer and I enjoy a friendly competition with myself to break a record, of some kind. This is keeping me focused and motivated.

5. The more I walk, the more I notice the familiar faces I see of people in my area who are also taking their own evening stroll around the neighborhood.

6. I enjoy the challenge of discovering new ways to reach a 3-mile walking route.  I hope to reach a 5-mile route later on.  I'm slowly trying to get my dog used to the longer walks, little by little.

7. Sometimes, I get to use my walks to catch up with people I know by giving them a call.  I don't know about you, but I still enjoy getting phone calls from people I haven't heard in a long while.

8. I've noticed that on days when I go for walks, my body seems to relax more in the evenings, and I get a really good night's sleep.

9. I have the best inner dialogues with myself and I get to have some time to myself to think things through.  I mostly think about healthy snacks I should try and where I want to travel to next. LOL

10. The very best part of walking is that I'm getting to enjoy slowly but surely seeing my big belly shrink a little more. I can feel my legs starting to get stronger once again.

I plan on continuing taking my evenings walks every chance I get. As the long summer days are here to stay for a little while longer, I will do my best to keep moving and get back into the habit of adopting an exercise routine.

If you would like to track your own steps down on this cool pedometer, I recommend you download Pacer on your smartphone device and get moving!

Mayra

Seeing the light

I'm sure you've heard of stories about other people having near death experiences they encounter when they find themselves in very dangerous situations.  I was watching a program as part of the Super Soul Sunday series of comedian Tracy Morgan talk about the accident that almost took his life about a year and half ago which happened on his drive home after doing a comedy show.  He talks about seeing his deceased father coming to him and telling him that he wasn't ready for him yet.  It made me think of my near death experience I had in high school.

New Year's Eve Hispanic Traditions

I seriously believe that every culture has some very interesting ways of welcoming the New Year.  I grew up in a Mexican household in the United States, so I got the best of both worlds. I do have to say, that we have some every fun and creative ways to welcome the New Year:

Confessions of a newly single woman

It's not easy living life when your heart is broken. People say that no one dies from a broken heart but I will say, it sure makes life more difficult.  I had my relationship with my boyfriend of over a year recently end and the pain is very much present.  For reasons that were out of my control and looking back, I can only hope that he let me go because he really truly loved me and wants me to live a happy life even if it's without him. On some days, I wake up with him on my mind often wonder if he  still thinks of me, if he misses me or wonders if I'm doing well or not. These days are definitely my bad days.
