I love challenges and I love them, even more, when I accomplish them. My co-worker decided to challenge us to a 30-day challenge inspired by hip-hop superstar Missy Elliott. We discovered that Missy Elliott lost more than 20 pounds by quitting two things: Bread and sugary drinks. I have been trying to get myself motivated to eat healthier and focus more on my health this year but with everything going on in my personal life, I decided that this challenge would be a great way to get things started.
After looking at before and after pictures of Missy Elliott, we got pumped up for this challenge. Even more so, when we pointed out that Missy Elliott looks more than 20 years younger. (Click here to read the inspiring article.) So we set some ground rules: "No bread, pasta, rice, cereal, pretty much everything found in the bottom of the food pyramid." There goes my love for potato sliced bread, pancakes, waffles, Hawaiian dinner rolls, and bagels. I knew I was in trouble. As for only drinking water, that's actually very easy for me since I strive to drink at least 84 ounces of water each day. Only drinking water is a great way to meet my water goal. We started this challenge on May 15th to run all the way to June 15th.
I'm not lying when I say this, but the first two weeks of this challenge have been hard for me. Especially when I go shopping and pass by the bread aisle and smell the intoxicating aroma of freshly baked bread. It is pure torture. Yet, I don't learn my lesson and I pass by there every time. My logic: If I can't eat it, let me at least smell the bread.
I am halfway through this challenge, and so far, I have seen a big difference in my abdomen area. My belly has gone down and I am seven pounds lighter. Watching the scale go down little by little is a great self-esteem booster and it is encouraging me to keep going.
So, what do I eat now? I am eating a lot of chicken, steak, and fish. I make my own salads and I'm eating more eggs in the mornings. I still go for the burger but this time, I make it protein style (I'm ditching the bun and getting a lettuce wrapped burger instead). I was excited to visit Carl's Jr after discovering that I can make any burger on the menu, low-carb style. So, I got myself a Super Star burger with no bun and no cheese. It was good.
This challenge is also teaching me to stick to my goals by passing on junk food and muffins. I have strong willpower. It's important to focus on the goal and not let others negatively influence you and keep you from reaching your goals. Instead, I buy a large ready-to-make salad bag to share with others in the office.
