Carpe Diem in 2016

Happy new year to you and yours! May 2016 bring you wonderful and amazing things and experiences your way.

Every year, without fail, I sit down and think of a few New Year's Resolutions and like a majority of us, I fail around February to fully accomplish my list.  So I've decided to do something different this year and that is, to enjoy every moment whether it be big or small. To not feel guilty for taking extra time to sleep-in on the weekends, to go window shopping if I feel like it, to call up a friend and actually have a wonderful conversation over the phone or in person.

May your 2016 be full of joy and sparkle.
We always say that we want to improve and be better but in reality, why not start 2016 with taking care of yourself and doing the things you want to do for your own self?  So, here I am making the commitment to make 2016 the year I get to appreciate the little things in life. To no longer say, "Let's get together soon" but I never take the time to actually make the commitment. To keep growing and learning new things about the world around me and about myself.

As I sit in an apartment balcony in Rabat, Morocco on this January 1st, 2016, I can't help but envy the people sitting at a cafe across the street from me enjoying a warm cup of tea and coffee and delightful conversations.  So with this in mind, here's to the next 366 days (due to the Leap Year) full of enjoying the little things that life has to offer. Carpe diem!

Happy new year,

Mayra

New Year's Eve Hispanic Traditions

I seriously believe that every culture has some very interesting ways of welcoming the New Year.  I grew up in a Mexican household in the United States, so I got the best of both worlds. I do have to say, that we have some every fun and creative ways to welcome the New Year:

Seeing the light

I'm sure you've heard of stories about other people having near death experiences they encounter when they find themselves in very dangerous situations.  I was watching a program as part of the Super Soul Sunday series of comedian Tracy Morgan talk about the accident that almost took his life about a year and half ago which happened on his drive home after doing a comedy show.  He talks about seeing his deceased father coming to him and telling him that he wasn't ready for him yet.  It made me think of my near death experience I had in high school.

Unanswered Prayers: Explained

When I was younger and naive, I used to pray a lot for the things I wanted and needed in my life.  A few years ago, I met a guy from an online dating site who I was certain he was the one for me. Over the years, I never truly understood why God didn't answer my prayers -- until now. It was very apparent to me that as this guy and I both grew up and live completely different lives; I noticed an overarching theme in his life where in the end, he has no inner peace in his life.  The drama in his life is still there as it was when I first met him many years ago but appear to be present in different ways.
