Kids these days will never know...

I am very blessed to have three nephews and two nieces under the age of 7. When I look at them, I wonder how the world will be when they are older and what they are going to be when they grow up. I am hoping that their lives will be in many ways easier and they grow up to be kind, caring, and productive human beings.
We all agree that technology nowadays has replaced so many things that we used to do as little as 20 years ago.  I am proud to be a '90s kid. Even though in my mind, the 90s seemed like it was only yesterday. I came up with a list of things that today's kids will never truly understand.

Kids these days will never know...

1. Book paddles-- Using a piece of wood to hold your book in place in the school library.  Mrs. Kecks was our elementary school librarian for the longest time.
2. Card catalog-- Do you want to look up a certain book?  You would go over to the card catalog to find out where the book was located on the shelf.
3. Books-- Actual books! And how to use an index and table of contents to look up something.
4. Cameras with film--I actually miss those days of taking pictures and dropping off your film to get developed.
5. Playing outside until the street lights came on.  I would ride my bicycle all afternoon and as my reward, I would get mosquito bites on my legs and arms in the summertime.
6. Drinking water from the water hose, which actually tasted good.
7. Jumping over the water sprinkler in the summertime while the grass was getting watered.
8. Buying those bubble gum cigarettes with the powder inside the wrapper from the Ice Cream truck and pretend to smoke.
9. Drinking soda from a plastic baggy and a straw (I used to do this in Mexico a lot when I was a kid).
10. Watching TGIF where Full House, Family Matters, and Step-by-Step were part of the line up.
11. Crushing hard on JTT from Home Improvement and reading Teen Magazine.
12. Babysitters Club was more than just a book series, they were our friends.
13. Dial-up Internet connection--I even miss the noise and the struggle it was to actually connect to the Internet.
14. Chat rooms-- When chatting with people online was not creepy and actually a fun thing to do.
15. Watching cartoons after school and Saturday mornings that looking back to now seem violent but we all turned out okay and normal.  (Wyle E. Coyote never got the roadrunner, poor little guy).
16. We fell in love with science by watching Bill Nye, the Science Guy.
17. We never actually figured out where the hell was Carmen Sandiego but at least the opening credits song was really catchy.
18. Most girls went through a Sanrio phase.  We loved Hello Kitty, Keroppi (frog), Kiki and Lala, Pekkle (duck) and my favorite, Pochacco.
19. Strawberry Nesquik and banana flavored Nesquik
20. Waiting for a phone call at home if you didn't have a voice machine.
21. Recording your favorite songs off of the radio on a cassette tape. And actually buying cassettes.

22. Playing Tetris on a Gameboy.
23. Where's Waldo? books were entertaining and you needed to have good eyes to look for that little guy.
24. When Michael Jordan was the best basketball player ever! Or better yet, the best athlete for that matter.
25. Wearing a schruchie would be the only way to keep your hair in a pony tail.

I'm sure there are way more that I'm missing out on. Where are my 1990s peeps?

Seeing the light

I'm sure you've heard of stories about other people having near death experiences they encounter when they find themselves in very dangerous situations.  I was watching a program as part of the Super Soul Sunday series of comedian Tracy Morgan talk about the accident that almost took his life about a year and half ago which happened on his drive home after doing a comedy show.  He talks about seeing his deceased father coming to him and telling him that he wasn't ready for him yet.  It made me think of my near death experience I had in high school.

New Year's Eve Hispanic Traditions

I seriously believe that every culture has some very interesting ways of welcoming the New Year.  I grew up in a Mexican household in the United States, so I got the best of both worlds. I do have to say, that we have some every fun and creative ways to welcome the New Year:

Confessions of a newly single woman

It's not easy living life when your heart is broken. People say that no one dies from a broken heart but I will say, it sure makes life more difficult.  I had my relationship with my boyfriend of over a year recently end and the pain is very much present.  For reasons that were out of my control and looking back, I can only hope that he let me go because he really truly loved me and wants me to live a happy life even if it's without him. On some days, I wake up with him on my mind often wonder if he  still thinks of me, if he misses me or wonders if I'm doing well or not. These days are definitely my bad days.
