I've been thinking a lot lately about what it truly means to be an adult. How does one actually know that they have become an adult, exactly? I'm not referring to when someone turns 18 years old and one gains the right to vote, or when someone turns 21 and they are legally able to drink alcohol and gamble in Las Vegas. I'm talking about when you look at yourself as being mature, responsible, dependable, and trustworthy. The moment when you think to yourself, "I am an adult now and there's no turning back" and you can either embrace it or hate it.
I can't really tell you when I became an adult exactly because it was a series of events that I made up in my mind, and I crossed off to help me confirm that I am an adult. What are these events? I'll tell you.
- When I traveled on my own
- When I lived in another country for several weeks and took their public transportation to and from work
- When I ate ice cream for dinner because I didn't have anyone telling me that I couldn't do it
- When people turn to me for guidance and have someone listen to them
- When I bought life insurance
- When I have to deal with medical insurance information
- When I served as a juror on a case
- When I opened my first bank account
- When I invested in mutual funds
- When I get a physical and get my stuff checked out
- When I got crows feet on my face
- When I got my first gray hairs and I was in denial about them
- When my knees and back hurt
- When my skin is always dry
- When I crave a margarita in the middle of the week
- When I need to take medication every day
- When I can't wait to get home and lay down for a bit
- When I aim to get at least 8 hours of sleep
- When I listen to music from when I was in high school and the songs are now considered "oldies"
The list can go on and on but I'm very curious to know when you "became an adult."
Hope to hear from you soon,
Mayra :)
