Welcome to Adulthood

I've been thinking a lot lately about what it truly means to be an adult. How does one actually know that they have become an adult, exactly? I'm not referring to when someone turns 18 years old and one gains the right to vote, or when someone turns 21 and they are legally able to drink alcohol and gamble in Las Vegas. I'm talking about when you look at yourself as being mature, responsible, dependable, and trustworthy. The moment when you think to yourself, "I am an adult now and there's no turning back" and you can either embrace it or hate it.

I can't really tell you when I became an adult exactly because it was a series of events that I made up in my mind, and I crossed off to help me confirm that I am an adult. What are these events? I'll tell you.

  • When I traveled on my own
  • When I lived in another country for several weeks and took their public transportation to and from work
  • When I ate ice cream for dinner because I didn't have anyone telling me that I couldn't do it
  • When people turn to me for guidance and have someone listen to them
  • When I bought life insurance
  • When I have to deal with medical insurance information
  • When I served as a juror on a case
  • When I opened my first bank account
  • When I invested in mutual funds
  • When I get a physical and get my stuff checked out
  • When I got crows feet on my face
  • When I got my first gray hairs and I was in denial about them
  • When my knees and back hurt
  • When my skin is always dry
  • When I crave a margarita in the middle of the week
  • When I need to take medication every day
  • When I can't wait to get home and lay down for a bit
  • When I aim to get at least 8 hours of sleep
  • When I listen to music from when I was in high school and the songs are now considered "oldies"
The list can go on and on but I'm very curious to know when you "became an adult."

Hope to hear from you soon,
Mayra :)

New Year's Eve Hispanic Traditions

I seriously believe that every culture has some very interesting ways of welcoming the New Year.  I grew up in a Mexican household in the United States, so I got the best of both worlds. I do have to say, that we have some every fun and creative ways to welcome the New Year:

Seeing the light

I'm sure you've heard of stories about other people having near death experiences they encounter when they find themselves in very dangerous situations.  I was watching a program as part of the Super Soul Sunday series of comedian Tracy Morgan talk about the accident that almost took his life about a year and half ago which happened on his drive home after doing a comedy show.  He talks about seeing his deceased father coming to him and telling him that he wasn't ready for him yet.  It made me think of my near death experience I had in high school.

Unanswered Prayers: Explained

When I was younger and naive, I used to pray a lot for the things I wanted and needed in my life.  A few years ago, I met a guy from an online dating site who I was certain he was the one for me. Over the years, I never truly understood why God didn't answer my prayers -- until now. It was very apparent to me that as this guy and I both grew up and live completely different lives; I noticed an overarching theme in his life where in the end, he has no inner peace in his life.  The drama in his life is still there as it was when I first met him many years ago but appear to be present in different ways.
